The Chrion Legend: Turning the Page

As I continued to sit on my bed, staring at the strange book that lay in front of me, I felt an urge to open it, to read whatever secrets its pages may hold.  For the second time that day, it felt as if my body had developed a mind of its own as my hand moved towards the book.  Closer and closer it drew to placing the warm sweaty flesh that was my fingers to the dry ancient parchment that was its pages.  After what felt like an eternity, my hand finally completed its journey to the leather bound enigma that lay in front of me.  I flipped it open and began to read.

Dear reader,
By this point in your possession of this volume you will have noticed that this is not an ordinary book.  You will have already caught glimpses of the dark forces that stand opposed to the contents of these pages.  And while I cannot say that things will become easier for you, it is certain that once you have completed the first stage of your journey, the step of which are contained in this book, you will have developed a countenance that will remain resilient in the face of the Enemy.  It is fair to warn you that this book is not ordinary and its words not absorbed in the usual manner of the novels and such of the rest of this world.  You are about to experience things that you have never felt before, never dreamt of, nor will you ever be able to see again.  All that I have left to say is that you are strong enough to face the challenges ahead, or otherwise you would not have been chosen.  I wish you strength for what is ahead and bid you a fond farewell until we may meet one day.
                                                                                                                            Sincerely,
                                                                                                                            A fellow traveler

Having read those words, I could only sit there and ponder their possible meaning.  Dark forces?  A journey?  The Enemy?  Challenges?  Chosen?  These questions and many others were pounding through my head, threatening to take either my sanity or the function of my brain.  With no other options seemingly available, I did something that set me on the path to a future that I would not exchange for any treasure that this or any other world has to offer.

I turned the page.
